A magnificent miniature portrait of a beautiful Parisian woman was created in 1823 by the French miniaturist Mlle Caroline Foulon (active from 1802 to 1835 in Paris), a student of Augustin.

Mlle Caroline Foulon (known until today only by the initial "C" of her first name) was born in Douai, in the north of France, in the last quarter of the 18th century.
She frequented the Parisian studio of Jean-Baptiste Jacques Augustin and lived at the beginning of the 19th century at 956 rue Sainte-Croix, near the Capucins. Her first mention in Paris dates back to 1802. In 1835, she was still alive (she exhibited miniatures at the Paris Salon that year).
Literature: Monograph “Painters in Miniature (1650-1850)” by N. Lemine-Bouchard (in French), Éditions de l'Amateur (2008).

Inscription: Monogram of the artist, “C”, attested, on the left edge and dated 1823; plaque de bronze portant le nom de l'artiste, fixée au cadre ; on the back of the original period frame, there is a gilt stamp “Maison A. Giroux”, signed Alphonse Giroux, one of the best restorers of the Parisian Maison d'art, cabinetmaker, framer and one of the official restorers of Notre-Dame Cathedral.

Technique: Gouache on ivory, period frame in glass and wood with base, covered with fabric; leather back.

Dimensions: unframed: 9 x 12 cm, framed: 22.3 x 27.4 cm.

Condition: overall good condition, no scratches or losses, slightly concave bone surface.
