A pupil of Dumont at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, he made his debut at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1877 and exhibited there regularly until the beginning of the 20th century. Gossin distinguished himself with a work marked by expressive realism and great elegance of line. He treated biblical and mythological subjects as well as allegorical and sentimental scenes, in a style that was both academic and imbued with sensitivity. His sculptures, often made of bronze or terracotta, are distinguished by the finesse of their modeling and the accuracy of their attitudes. He won several distinctions at the Salon, including an honorable mention in 1882, and his works were published by several renowned founders of the late 19th century. Louis Gossin belongs to this generation of artists who were able to reconcile classical tradition and romantic naturalism, making his figures—such as David the Victor—true incarnations of heroic beauty.
