René Lelong studied at the Académie Julian from 1879 to 1891. He was awarded a 3rd class medal at the Salon des artistes français in 1895, of which he became a member in 1898. He created advertising posters and illustrated numerous books and texts, notably in the Nelson collection or the magazines Femina, Je sais tout, Lectures pour tous, L'Illustration. In 1925, he was part of the jury for the Gustave Doré Grand Prix competition, alongside George Auriol, Carlègle, Maxime Dethomas, Raymond Escholier, Abel Faivre, Raymond Renefer, Auguste Roubille, Clément Serveau and René Vincent.
