"India - Seated Deity In Meditation - Carved Sandstone - 12th-16th Century - 21 Cm"
Charming stone votive statuette from India, carved in sandstone. The figure, seated cross-legged on a flat base, adopts a meditative posture. The serene face, hair tied back in a bun, and pearl necklace evoke representations of bodhisattvas or prosperity deities (Yakṣa or Kuvera type). In one hand, he holds a small container, perhaps a ritual pot or an offering cup; the other hand appears to hold a symbolic flower or fruit. An early fragment, the upper left part missing, an old break with the same patina as the rest, attesting to a contemporary fracture. The back and general surface show gentle wear, consistent with long burial or prolonged exposure. Indian workshop work, probably post-medieval. Probably between the 12th and 16th centuries. Mounted on a modern wooden base. Total height: 16 cm alone (21 cm including base) Width 10 cm Thickness 6 cm.Provenance: Brought back by a military family who lived between the Indian colonies and Africa between 1920 and 1960. Then by family descendants. Good general condition, nice presence in a display case.
