René Quillivic (1879-1969) Oil On Wood The Giraffe Unicycle
Rare, truly original theme for the Breton painter René Quillivic. Oil on panel circa 1950 depicting a man holding a giraffe unicycle. Circa 1950 theme. Very pretty painting with a lot of material, thick brushstrokes. René Quillivic (1879–1969) was a Breton sculptor, painter, engraver and ceramist, born in Plouhinec (Finistère) and died in Paris. Coming from a modest family, he began his career as a ship's carpenter before turning to sculpture and engraving. He is best known for his war memorials in Lower Brittany, where he innovated by representing the sacrifice of war through the eyes and attitudes of the relatives of the deceased, rather than through combat scenes. He also worked for the HB earthenware factory in Quimper, renewing traditional motifs, and produced woodcuts inspired by Celtic culture and the sea, such as the “History of the Sea” series or illustrations for literary works.
