Camille Hilaire (August 2, 1916 - June 7, 2004) was a French painter, lithographer, upholsterer, mosaicist and stained glass artist, born in Metz to a modest family. At the age of 15, he discovered the work of Albrecht Dürer, which was to become a major source of inspiration for his work. He began his career as a house painter before devoting himself to art in the 1930s, frequenting the Metz library to copy the Old Masters.
He entered the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He entered the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris during the Second World War, where he studied under an assumed name (Leblanc) due to the Occupation. He then became a pupil and friend of the cubist André Lhote, whose influence marked his work, on the borderline between figuration and post-cubism. His canvases are characterized by bright colors and vibrant light, despite their sometimes dark themes. In 1947, he was appointed professor of drawing and decorative composition at the École nationale supérieure d'art in Nancy, then in Paris from 1958. He won several prestigious prizes, including the Prix de Venise in 1948 and the Prix de la Casa de Velázquez in 1950. Throughout his life, he traveled (Spain, Italy, Venice, Normandy) and explored various media: painting, watercolor, lithography, tapestry, stained glass. His autonomous work, free from the dominant avant-garde trends, left its mark on French painting in the mid-20th century.Camille Hilaire died on June 7, 2004 in Fourges (Normandy) and is buried in the Cimetière de l'Est in Metz.
