Renaissance Altar Frame, Probably Italian, Late 16th Century
Large architectural frame from an altar retable, probably from 16th-century Italy, made of pine and linden. The composition has a three-part arrangement, with the narrower side panels articulated by pilasters decorated with arabesques. Seraphim appear on the bases, while the capitals feature vegetal sculpture. The pilasters are surmounted by boldly profiled cornices, volutes, and projecting risalits. The innermost molding of the central segmental arch is decorated with a classical ribbon motif. This arch culminates in volutes that merge into a dentil frieze decorated with angel heads and additional foliage. The reverse is whitewashed and has two polychrome-painted angels in the upper corners: one holding the stone tablets, the other triumphantly raising a chalice. Oval indentations and mounting traces suggest the presence of now-vanished elements. Each side panel originally had four decorative inserts, and the upper section was once also framed.
