"Empire Secretary Desk With Caryatids, Early 19th Century"
An Empire-style secretary desk comprising four drawers and a drop-front writing surface. The piece rests on pedestal legs, veneered and patinated with gilt, flanked by pilasters carved with wooden caryatid busts and claw feet at the base. The mounts are of fire-gilt bronze. The writing surface is veneered, and the interior is fitted with ten drawers arranged around a central compartment adorned with double arches and columns. The mirrored back enhances the visual effect of the parquet flooring laid in a herringbone pattern in various woods. Veneered in walnut, the secretary desk has been professionally restored and hand-polished.
