Signed Netsuke Depicting A Meditating Sage, Japan, Late Edo Period, 19th Century
Netsuke of a Meditating Sage, Japan, Late Edo Period, 19th Century Signed in the base
Finely carved ivory, honey-gold patina, signs of wear
This delicate netsuke embodies the serenity and artistic mastery of the late Edo period. Carved from dense, luminous ivory, it depicts a bearded man draped in voluminous robes, the folds deeply incised with remarkable precision. He holds a mysterious object close to his chest—perhaps a talisman or sacred scroll—while his face, imbued with calm and wisdom, reveals exquisite detail: arched brows, half-closed eyelids, and lips gently poised in silent contemplation.
The reverse features two circular himotoshi, discreetly integrated into the flowing garment, alongside swirling motifs that evoke clouds or the breath of life. The warm patina, subtly darkened in the recesses, speaks to respectful handling and prolonged contact with the hand.
At once utilitarian object and miniature sculpture, this netsuke reflects the harmony between spirituality and daily life in Japanese art. It may represent a rakan or a Taoist hermit—figures revered for their detachment and enlightened presence.
