Object description :

"Bertel Thorvaldsen - Portfolio Of 8 Albumen Prints By Budtz Müller (1837-1884)"
Thorwaldsen-Album
Portfolio of photographic reproductions of Bertel Thorvaldsen's sculptures and bas-reliefs preserved at the Thorvaldsen Museum in Copenhagen by Budtz Müller, one of the most renowned Danish photographers of his time.

Official photographer of the Copenhagen court, Rudolph Budtz Müller (1837–1884) was also a pioneer in the reproduction of works of art in Denmark. His work, combining documentary rigor and aesthetic sense, contributed to the international dissemination of Danish artistic heritage at a time when photography was becoming an essential tool for knowledge and visual transmission.

This portfolio, entitled Thorwaldsen-Album, illustrates the principal sculptures and bas-reliefs of the master Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770–1844), a major figure of European neoclassicism. Inspired by Antiquity and Canova, Thorvaldsen embodied in Copenhagen an artistic ideal based on purity of form and harmony of proportion. His works, now preserved in the museum that bears his name, were widely disseminated in the 19th century thanks to photography, which made these models of academic beauty accessible to a wider public.

Rare portfolio comprising eight albumen prints by Budtz Müller.
Each print is mounted on cardboard, with the author's dry stamp and caption printed on the mount.
Image sizes: from 17.5 × 17.5 cm to 22 × 17.3 cm;
Mount sizes: 47.5 × 32 cm;
Portfolio size: 51,8 × 35,5 cm.
