Biedermeier Casket Box, Ice Birch, Brass, Germany, Circa 1840
A beautiful, unadorned Biedermeier box from Germany, circa 1840. Ice birch veneer over oak and black-painted softwood inside. Large double brass lock and three hinges (two in the center and an additional one with a curved strap on the left). On the front of the lid, an ebonized knob with a white dot. Underside veneered in mahogany. Restored, hand-polished with shellac.
