Chest Of Drawers-secretary In Polychrome Marquetry And Bone Inlays — Lombardy, 18th Century
Rare and spectacular Lombard chest of drawers with a crossbow front, opening with three drawers and a flap hidden in the first drawer, revealing an interior secretary lined with six small drawers. Refined work from northern Italy, Lombardy region, circa 1730–1750. Exceptional polychrome marquetry in fruitwoods (maple, pear, plum, walnut, and stained woods), enhanced with engraved and carved bone inlays depicting faces, hands, and costume details. The decorative scenes illustrate antique figures, probably of Roman or mythological inspiration, as well as exotic animals and birds in stylized landscapes. The upper shelf is decorated with four polychrome parrots at the corners, surrounding a central scene representing a reclining figure, which has been the subject of an old restoration. Each side also features a central marquetry parrot. Parts of the decoration are enhanced with fine painting and pen engravings, in keeping with the Lombard decorative tradition. The first drawer, opening by dropping down, forms a writing tablet and reveals a blond maple interior, with drawers and secret compartments. Ebonized frames, double crossbow front, molded base. Probably originally on turned ball feet, now removed. Original patina, some wear, cracks and old restorations, marquetry remaining in its original state. A rare piece combining the ingenuity of ceremonial furniture and the narrative richness of 18th-century Lombard decoration.
