Beautiful Louis XVI – Directoire Transition period chest of drawers, in solid mahogany and mahogany veneer, opening with four drawers on the front. Parisian work circa 1790–1798. The rectilinear fronts are framed with fine gilt brass fillets, emphasizing the purity of the design. The uprights with fluted detached columns, topped with gilt bronze capitals and bases, elegantly punctuate the whole. The rectangular handles and keyholes are in period gilt bronze, with a sober and geometric design characteristic of the Directoire style. Top in molded gray Sainte-Anne marble, original and in perfect condition. Dovetail joints, original backs and sides, beautiful warm patina. A refined and balanced piece of furniture, witness to the transition from Louis XVI taste to the Directoire style.
