Object description :

"Louis XVI Period Game Table, Topped With A Burgundy Marble Stone Top. "
Elegant Louis XVI period game table, in painted walnut, topped with a top in pink marble stone known as Burgundy stone. Worked on its four sides, this center table or console with four legs illustrates with accuracy and balance the neoclassical aesthetic that prevailed in the second half of the 18th century. The table has a beautiful architecture in the neoclassical spirit, with a belt projection highlighted by a fine molded baguette forming a Greek fretwork decoration, a motif directly inspired by ancient architecture and very present in the decorative arts at the end of the Louis XV and the reign of Louis XVI (bronzes, marquetry and sculpted friezes). The legs, sheathed in shape with a square section, are fluted and rudenté, other references to the antique classical vocabulary, giving the whole an architectural rigor and a sober elegance. This is an authentic game table, designed from the outset to receive a mineral top. The top of the apron, worked without rebates or traces of a wooden top, confirms that the piece of furniture has never been modified - unlike many tables whose wooden top was later replaced by marble to enhance their value. The structure, in walnut, is mounted with pegged mortise and tenon joints. The inner faces of the apron retain their original paint, attesting that the table was intended to be painted from its creation - a common practice in regional workshops of the 18th century. The current paint, redone in accordance with traditional methods using sheepskin glue, Meudon white and natural pigments, has been protected by a shellac varnish, restoring the depth and mattness of the old patinas. The top, in Burgundy marble stone, has a pinkish background punctuated with shell inclusions and beige shades, typical of the regional quarries exploited in the 18th century. The combination of walnut and this local stone suggests a Burgundian production, combining rigor, authenticity and sober elegance. This table embodies the refinement of the Louis XVI style interpreted in the provinces: measured architecture, antique inspiration and purity of lines, magnified by a beautiful quality execution and a harmonious patina. Dimensions: Height: 74 cm Width: 94 cm Depth: 57 cm
