"Guinguette on the banks of the Seine"

Oil on canvas (round format),
Signed lower left,
Countersigned twice on the back on the frame: "P de Castro",
Old PLM transport labels and numbers,

Beautiful work in the original format by the French painter Paul de Castro which represents the terrace of a guinguette or a restaurant on the banks of the Seine, most certainly in the area of Rouen or Honfleur where the artist liked to paint bucolic scenes. The artist plays on the play of light and the contrasts of colors between the foreground and the background. The latter, in the soft colors of an early morning, shows us a view of the river animated by two steamboats.

A student of Fernand Cormon and Eugène Thirion at the Ecole Nationale Supérieur des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Paul de Castro exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants, the Salon de la Société National des Beaux-Arts and the Salon d'Automne landscapes of Rouen, Honfleur, Provence and Italy as well as views of the streets of Paris and interior scenes, notably of the Palace of Versailles.
From 1907 to 1932, Paul de Castro exhibited regularly in the Galeries Parisienne alongside other artists such as Auguste Chabaud, Lucien Simon and André Roberty. Of Italian origin, Paul de Castro was naturalized French.
He was named a knight of the Legion of Honor.

His works are now preserved in many museums in France: the Calvet Museum in Avignon, the Museum of Fine Arts in La Rochelle, the Petit Palais and the Musée d'Orsay in Paris; and abroad: Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp.

Dimensions: Diameter 66.5 cm, without frame.
