"Biot Jar"
Superb antique Biot jar, a remarkable 1.06 m high, with a generous curve and a soft patina bearing witness to time and the elements. Its pale yellow enamel around the neck contrasts elegantly with the clear, smooth body, typical of traditional Provençal productions. Biot jars, originating from the charming village of Biot near Antibes, have been famous since the 17th century. Originally, they were used to store olive oil, a precious product of the region. Their ovoid shape, both aesthetic and functional, allowed for better weight distribution and optimal conservation. The Biot workshops were distinguished by their exceptional know-how: each jar was rope-turned, an artisanal technique that consisted of mounting the clay around a rope serving as a guide, before being fired in vast wood-fired kilns. This tradition, passed down from generation to generation, has made the village world-renowned, still today considered one of the great centers of Provençal pottery. This piece, with its impressive size and sculptural presence, stands out as a true decorative element for exterior or interior, evoking authentic Provence and the Mediterranean art of living.
