Bourgeois-aine Colorization Box For Crystoleum Circa 1900 Photograph
Light oak box complete with colors and accessories for coloring with crystoleum. This box contains color tubes and many accessories including a box of impalpable powder and sandpaper for scratching albumen prints. Sold with a crystoleum and a practical treatise on miniature photography. In 1867, Joseph BOURGEOIS-AÎNE opened a color business in Paris and a factory in Montreuil where he manufactured the first so-called "non-dangerous" colors intended for art schools. Later, he would offer his colors for retouching photography. Crystoleum is a painted photograph fixed under glass. An albumen print is glued onto a concave glass, the paper support of the print is then rubbed, the remaining image is colored by hand with oil paint. This extremely expensive process was used for a short period from 1880 to 1910. The box was attacked by woodworms but has now been stabilized. All period accessories were used.
