"Denarius Of C. Vibius Pansa, Consul, Mounted On A Tie Pin "
The tie pin is one of the rare jewels that a man can wear in the 19th century. At that time, depending on the collectors' whims, small precious objects were mounted. It is not uncommon to see real Roman or Greek coins used as subjects. Here it is the silver denarius struck by a consul close to Caesar in the war against Pompey, Caius Vibius Pansa Caetronianius (-89 - -43 BC) which is nicely set in a rose gold crown, the needle remaining in silver. It represents Apollo on the front and a quadriga on the reverse. In very good condition, it is both a rather rare coin and a typical jewel of the 19th century dandy.
