The Senufo people constitute a population of West Africa which includes around thirty subgroups, shared between the south of Mali (mainly in the region of Sikasso), Burkina Faso and the north of the Ivory Coast.
The Kpeliyé'e mask plays a vital role in initiation rites associated with the Poro cult, a central institution for Senufo social and spiritual organization. Used during ceremonies, it embodies spiritual qualities and natural forces essential to the community. The mask's anthropo-zoomorphic elements recall the interconnection between human beings and nature, a fundamental notion in Senufo beliefs.
