Pair Of Dancers With Bronze Cymbals, Ernest Racoulet (1890-1900)
This elegant pair of sculptures by French sculptor Ernest Rancoulet depicts a dancing duo in lively, rhythmic poses. The female figure is shown with her arms raised, in mid-motion, holding cymbals. Her male counterpart forms a balanced counterpoint, with a similarly expressive posture. Together, they evoke a scene of movement, music, and graceful coordination. Both bronzes are signed and rest on a yellow marble base.
About the artist: Ernest Rancoulet (1842-1915) was originally from Bordeaux and trained at the École des Beaux-Arts. He was a pupil of the renowned sculptor Lequesne and exhibited several times at the prestigious Paris Salon between 1870 and 1876. His works demonstrate a fairly classical academic approach, combined with a realistic depiction of human figures. In works such as The Harvester and The Peasant Woman, Rancoulet demonstrates his interest in rural life: women in simple traditional dress are depicted with respect, dignity, and subtle elegance. In other sculptures, such as Work, we see a more allegorical approach, where work, study, and progress are symbolized by a youthful figure surrounded by attributes from the sciences and arts.
