André-Léon Vivrel (1886–1976) is a French painter, draftsman and illustrator. A student at the Académie Julian and then at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, he trained in the studios of Marcel Baschet and Henri Royer. Mobilized during the First World War, he was decorated with the Croix de Guerre before resuming his artistic activity. From 1913 onwards, he exhibited regularly at the Salon des Artistes Français, where he received several awards (honorable mention, silver medal). His work is varied—portraits, still lifes, seascapes, nudes—but it is above all his landscapes that made his mark. Inspired by his travels in Brittany, Provence, Corsica, and Normandy, Vivrel sought in his painting the light and the "instantaneous impression" of the motif. A perfectionist, he did not hesitate to destroy canvases he deemed imperfect.
