"Léon Jouhaud (1874-1950) At The Milliner's 1933. Rare Enamel Project. Limoges, Bichet, Rouard..."
New work by Léon Jouhaud this time a rare and exceptional enamel project in watercolor and gouache titled Chez la modiste, 1933, signed with the monogram stamp at the bottom right. View format 18x18cm, format of the painted project 16cm and format including frame 29.5x29.5 cm It is indeed an enamel project called "Chez la modiste de 1933", surely one of Jouhaud's most successful enamels, it was notably exhibited at the famous Limoges enamel biennial of 1988 where it is reproduced in color in the exhibition catalog (see 2nd photo). This catalog can still be found at the BAL museum in Limoges. Léon Jouhaud therefore realized this project in watercolor and gouache in 1933, Jouhaud often made several studies before creating the enamel, sometimes in watercolor or gouache, pastel and graphite. These genre scenes or intimate scenes are among the most successful of his creations and they are his most sought-after subjects by amateurs and therefore the most highly rated. This large enamel, if it were to sell, would easily reach a price between 5 and 8000 €, or even more because we have seen Jouhaud enamels sell for over 15000 € I no longer present Léon Jouhaud, famous painter, enameler and ceralist from Limoges, student of his father-in-law Charles Bichet. He will first be a doctor, but pushed by his friends Bichet, Thomas and Alluaud he will abandon his profession to devote himself to his passion, painting, enameling and ceramics. Léon Jouhaud studied privately, passed his baccalaureate in 1892 and, with a passion for bacteriology, began studying medicine in Limoges, then in Paris. He practiced in his hometown from 1903 to 1906, then launched an artistic career in the field of enamel, an old local tradition. His early aesthetic, neo-impressionism, evolved towards popular or intimate scenes, with soft or cubist lines and bold colors. He shared many technical developments with Camille Tharaud and he produced several porcelain pieces at home. Léon Jouhaud, who practiced painting at the same time as enameling, appeared, from 1910, at the exhibitions of the Society of Independent Artists and the Society of French Artists in Limoges and Paris; he exhibited pastel paintings as well as painted enamels (genre scenes, landscapes, still lifes). He also exhibited at the famous Parisian dealer Rouard alongside the greatest artists of the time. This project is in perfect condition, delivered framed in a modern black molding.
