But he is most famous for his controversial surrender of Metz in 1870 during the Franco-Prussian War, which earned him a death sentence (commuted to prison), then exile and poverty.The photographer Appert generally refers to two brothers active in the 19th century: Eugène Appert (1830–1891) and Ernest-Charles Appert (1831–1890).
