Pair Of Fountain Masks, Mascarons, Head Of The Potamoi River God, Bronze, 17th Century
Rare pair of finely chiseled bronze fountain masks, representing mascarons of bearded men: heads of the River God* or Potamoi in Greek mythology, from the late 16th-early 17th centuries. These masks are in good condition and are of remarkable quality. Please note: some slight shocks, dirt and wear of time, see photos. * Potamoi: In Greek mythology, the river gods or Potamoi are minor deities personifying watercourses. The Potamoi are the sons of the Titans Ocean and Tethys. They are the brothers of the Oceanids. In the Theogony, Hesiod relates that there are 3,000 Potamoi and as many Oceanids.
