Rene Depestre is a Hatian born poet and writer, he was a key player in the revolutionary movement of January 1946, contributing to the fall of President Élie Lescot in Haiti.
He moved to Paris where he studied literature and political science at the Sorbonne between 1946 and 1950. After the Cuban revolution, under the invitation of Che Guevara, he became minister in Castro’s Cuba and actively participated in the cultural management of the country while continuing to build his poetic work, disappointed by the direction of the revolution, He decides to leave the island in 1978. He has lived in France ever since.
