Although often referred to as a "Roman bridge," it actually dates back to 1637. It was historically used as one of the routes taken by pilgrims traveling to Roncesvalles via Saint-Michel and Orisson. This path is now an integral part of the network of pilgrims to Santiago de Compostela, with Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port serving as a starting point for pilgrims traveling the Via Podiensis, one of the main pilgrimage routes. Along with the current ruins of the old Eyheraberry mill, this bridge has given its name to the neighborhood where it is located.
