The Annunciation, Perimeter By Francesco Di Simone Ferrucci (1437-1493, Tuscany, 15th
As in the marble panel in Arezzo Cathedral executed by Francesco di Simone Ferrucci, our sculptor here too uses the stylistic expedient of the trefoil niche to frame the figures. In this case, it is a seated Virgin with Child upon whom the dove of the Holy Spirit descends, surrounded by angels. The architectural tympanum that surmounts it is supported by fluted Corinthian columns. On either side stand Saint Peter and Saint Paul, with the usual attributes of keys and sword. The strong classicism of the Late Antique taste, which permeates this relief, suggests a deep knowledge of Roman Antiquity and, therefore, a possible Capitoline provenance, looking among the sculptors active in the papal sphere towards the end of the 15th century.
