"Rare Pair Of Porcelain Vases With Japanese Decor, 19th Century "
Rare pair of porcelain vases with hand-painted and gold-relief Japanese-style decoration. On each vase, two cartouches depict a Japanese woman and a Japanese man in traditional clothing. This pair of vases is characteristic of the fashion for Japonism in the 1870s and 1880s in the West. Decoration signed 'L. Malpass'. Pierre Louis Malpass was a porcelain painter known in the 1870s. His studio was located at 16 rue Pierre Levé in Paris. He was also part of the studio of Paul Blot (Feuillet's successor), at 3 rue de la Paix at the end of the 19th century. A porcelain painting after Jacques-Louis David's painting, 'Le Sacre', by Malpass is kept at the Château de Malmaison and Bois-Préau.
