Engraving on Japanese paper 1991, printed by Maurice Felt4/10Jean-Paul Riopelle (1923-2002) was a Canadian painter and engraver, born in Montreal. He studied at the École du meuble and joined the automatist movement with Borduas. In 1948, he signed the Refus global manifesto, then moved to Paris. There, he frequented the surrealists and became known for his palette knife paintings. His style: mosaics of intense colors and organic forms. He also practiced engraving and lithography, working with Arte-Maeght and then Maurice Felt. His prints took up his nature themes: birds, leaves, landscapes. He exhibited at the Venice Biennale, the Documenta in Kassel and in major museums. In 1991, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts dedicated a retrospective to him. He ended his life on Île-aux-Grues, recognized as one of the greatest artists from Canada.
