Object description :

"Szablya, Hungarian-polish Hussar Saber (hussars Serving In French King'sarmy?) "
This saber is typical of the Poland-Hungary region due to its mounting. It can be dated to the second half of the 18th century. The blade is certainly an oriental prize blade, probably Ottoman, since it shows a Damascus structure. It is tempting to attribute this weapon to a unit of hussars in the service of France, since the model corresponds to those carried by these horsemen, but a precise attribution is always uncertain. However, this saber does come from a French collection
BLADE : It is a blade with a strong curve, with a flat back underlined by a fuller that extends on each face over two-thirds of the length. The last third shows a widening and a strong counter-edge. Beautiful visible Damascus structure.
Blade length (in straight line) = 70 cm, width near the guard 3.9 cm, thickness near the guard = 6.8 mm
GUARD : It is an iron guard typical of this type of weapon, with a crossguard with wide straight quillons and long baguette ears
CAP : it is a short-tailed cap, "Hungarian style" topped with a diamond on which the tang of the blade is riveted.
GRIP: it is made of wood, covered with leather without wire binding.
SCABBARD : it is made of wood covered with leather, with iron bracelets and chape, as is traditional for hussar sabers of the Poland-Hungary region. A remnant of old leather strap is attached to one of the suspension rings.
In conclusion, this is a saber of an unusual model, which will complete in an original way a collection on the theme of hussar sabers
