Attributable to the painter Cornelis de Baellieur the Elder (Antwerp, 1607-1671), who began his career in his native Antwerp, where he had "Lisart" as an excellent tutor. He became an established master himself—he was a free master of the prestigious Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke—and primarily created works of religious subjects, much sought after by the clergy, nobles, and wealthy Antwerp merchants.
The painting is framed in a precious ebonized wooden frame with elegant gilded floral and scroll motifs, perfectly preserved. The frame itself is a refined example of decorative art, further enhancing the work's sacred subject.
