Wine Measure In Glazed Terracotta, Named And Dated, 18th Century
Important wine measure in glazed terracotta from the south of France. This wine measure has the particularity of having the name of its owner and of being dated 1764. The name marked Mr Roŷre leads me to think that it is Jean-Marc de Royère (1727 - 1802) French prelate of the 18th century, bishop of Tréguier then of Castres. This name and this date are inscribed on the top of the wine measure in a decoration of vase, branches, flowers and a bird.
This wine measure has unfortunately lost its handle, the start of which is decorated with a fleur-de-lis. In a very classic way, there are some missing varnish and the wooden lid has disappeared. This wine measure is glazed green on the outside and yellow on the inside. This type of pottery is very rare and its particularities both in terms of date and owner make me consider this object to be of museum quality.
