A Red Cross nurse gives water to a seriously wounded French soldier. This work refers to the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, which was the first major conflict in which the Red Cross served. Lagneau, a sculptor from Auxerre, drew inspiration from the tradition of Pietàs to create this moving sculpture. It is also a politically engaged work that displays the symbols of the Red Cross and of the French Republic. More than a work of art reflecting on the tragedy of war and humanitarian aid, it is an important artifact in the history of the Red Cross. Another example of this small bronze group is preserved at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in La Rochelle.
