Paul Désiré Trouillebert (1831-1900), Woman with a Bundle, oil on canvas, signed lower left, 56 x 46.5 cm. Good overall condition, with minor losses (see last photo). Framed painting. Barbizon School. Paul Désiré Trouillebert (1829–1900) was a French painter associated with the Barbizon School, a major artistic movement of the 19th century. A contemporary of Corot, from whom he drew inspiration, Trouillebert captured bucolic scenes with great delicacy—here, a woman gathering wood in a verdant landscape. What makes Trouillebert's work unique within the Barbizon School is his subtle and expressive use of red. Where his contemporaries often favored muted, earthy tones, Trouillebert introduced touches of red—sometimes vivid, sometimes muted—which enlivened his compositions, attracted the eye, and gave his landscapes a particular warmth.
