Roger Schardner (1898-1891) - The Death Of Brünnhilde
Oil on canvas. Work presented at the 1972 Salon des Indépendants in Paris, in the "Surrealists" section. The apotheotic finale of Richard Wagner's monumental "The Ring of the Nile" is presented in this grand and grandiose surrealist vision by the renowned French artist Roger Schardner. At one of the lyrical peaks of Western music, disillusioned by everything and everyone, riding the steed Grane, the Valkyrie throws herself into the flames, returning the ring to the fire and triggering the ultimate end of the gods. Roger Schardner (1898-1981) was a French painter, draftsman and lithographer born and died in Paris. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Angers before being drafted into the army in 1917. After his military service, he moved to Paris, where he married Ernestine Lameth in 1923. Schardner became a regular exhibitor at Parisian salons, notably the Salon des Indépendants and the Salon des Artistes Français. His travels to Strasbourg, Spain, and Belgium, among other places, influenced his work, which is immortalized in numerous sketchbooks. - Unframed image dimensions: 146 x 114 cm / 148 x 116 cm, in a beautiful original gilt frame. - Galerie Montbaron includes an information sheet prepared by a certified art historian with all of its lots.
