Two techniques used for this Shahsavan: soumak* in the center (originally, front of the satchel) and banded kilims (originally, back of the satchel). Different motifs are represented, including zoomorphic spiders, in shades of red, green, navy blue. Some abraches: term designating a variation of tones in the same color.
*Soumak: technique of weaving with wrapped weft (embroidery), called in Iran suzan, suzani meaning 'embroidered with a needle'.
The territory of the shahsavans is located south and west of the Caspian Sea, in Iranian Azerbaijan. Made up of Kurdish, Persian, Turkish, Tajik and Caucasian ethnic groups, the shahsavan confederation was formed under the reign of the Safavid sovereign Shah Abbas (reigned 1587-1629).
