Luigi Zuccheri, “Laguna al crepuscolo” (Lagoon at dusk), oil on canvas, 20th century.
The painting depicts a large expanse of water surrounded by reeds and low islands. In the foreground, fish can be seen swimming just below the surface and water birds perched on the muddy banks. In the dark, turbulent sky, a group of ducks fly in formation towards the horizon, where a small village in golden tones can be glimpsed, illuminated by a glow that contrasts with the stormy clouds.
The brushwork is lively and slightly textured, capable of rendering the changing light of a lagoon landscape.
Zuccheri made his name on the national scene with a baroque style of metaphysical ancestry, inspired by the landscapes and animals of the Venetian lagoon and the Friuli countryside.
The painting is signed “L. Zuccheri” in the lower left corner.
