Italian Pastiglia Box 15th Century
It measures 16 cm x 10.5 cm x 10.5 cm 6.29 x 14.13 x 14.13 inches
and has a historical decoration on each side relating to antiquity : a chariot drawn by two lions, two satyrs perched on an elephant presenting a child in a bag....
This type of object is rare
there are some at the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, the Louvre Museum and a few at the Musée National de la Renaissance in Ecouen. (mainly from the Rothschild collection).
As it is, the item has not been cleaned nor restored.
In 2002, the Lowe Art Museum at the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida held an exhibition of Pastiglia Boxes: Hidden Treasures of the Italian Renaissance from the collection of the Galleria Nazionale d'arte antica in Rome, and an 80-page exhibition catalogue was published in English and Italian.
