The painting depicts a brown-fleeced GOAT, immortalized in a lush and luminous rural landscape of Campania. The animal, depicted in profile as it grazes, emerges against a backdrop of sloping hills and a luminous sky, elements typical of the environmental and light sensitivity Carelli developed during his work in Naples, Rome, and Paris. The careful rendering of naturalistic details and chiaroscuro highlights the technical mastery the artist acquired under the guidance of his father Raffaele and later William Leitch. The artist's signature is visible at the bottom.
The preparatory drawing for our painting, titled "Study of a Goat," is housed in the Certosa di San Martino in Naples. It is registered with inventory number 11364(245 - datable between 1845 and 1870.
