The Lamassus placed at the gates of Assyrian palaces or cities, more than 3000 years ago, had the function of protecting the inhabitants and intimidating foreigners. The Assyrian civilization was discovered by archaeologists circa1840 and many works were brought to France around 1852-54 and exhibited at the Louvre. Following the success of the exhibition of these pieces, this magnificent object was created by the Austrian earthenware factory Gerbing & Stephan. (1861-1903).
