Elegant pewter wine PITCHER, shaped with a flared foot, oblique straight goblet and raised lid with a thumbpiece in the shape of a two-sided shell with five rays.
Height: 25.9 cm.
UPPER NORMANDY (Probably ROUEN), First half of the 17th century

In good condition and very early in the period, a sealing refill at the bottom is noted.
This is an "ancestor" of type I of the Upper Normandy classification, type II being baluster-shaped. Prototypes from the 15th and 16th centuries are very rare. It should be noted that their encounter is always of interest for the archaeology of pewter because they announce and explain the shape of the models that will continue, with a few local variations, during the following three centuries. According to the technique practiced at that time, this piece was obtained in longitudinal cast iron presenting at the bottom an indistinct countermark indicated by an arrow on the last picture showing the interior background. Also called "shell cast iron", the body of the pitcher was obtained by welding the two longitudinal parts together, the location of the axis of the mold then being obstructed by a pellet welded to the interior bottom often supporting a countermark with the initials of the founder. This technique will be abandoned and replaced by radial cast irons towards the middle of the 17th century. Note in passing that the oldest examples rest directly on the bottom, that they are without pinched spouts and fitted with a lid with a raised flat roof. It is common to note, as is the case here, that the interior of the handle is molded; an,se which generally adopts this animated form with a base "close to the body" noted on the example presented here; this is not a distortion.
