The artist having emigrated to the United States in 1938, this painting is most certainly one of the last works of the artist in his native village.
Biography:
"Céline Marie Tabary (July 29, 1908 in Vermelles (62) - May 23, 1993 in Cabris (06)) was an artist and professor of arts at Howard University in Washington DC, USA. She championed African-American art in the 1940s in Washington. Tabary won the Landscape Prize in 1944 from the National Museum of Washington. Tabary was a longtime friend and colleague of Lois Mailou Jones (African-American painter, 1905-1998). They met at the Académie Julian in Paris in 1937. Tabary followed Jones to the United States, emigrating to Washington, DC in 1938, and remained there following the outbreak of World War II. She returned to France during the 1950s. Her works have been exhibited widely, including at the Salon des Artistes Français in Paris; the Institute of Modern Art in Boston; the National Academy Museum and School; the Barnett-Aden Gallery in Washington; and Howard University in Washington. She also exhibited at the Corcoran Gallery and the Whyte Gallery. Tabary was also a member of arts organizations on both sides of the Atlantic, including the Washington Watercolor Club and the Artists Guild of Washington (USA) and the Société des Artistes Lillois (France). »
