Municipality concerned: Sainte-Agnès On the southern flank of the Belledonne Massif, overlooking Grenoble, the glacial cirque of the Boulon waterfalls presents itself as an amphitheater of cliffs in which around thirty waterfalls of all sizes rush and trickle. They develop, framed by the peaks of the Grand Replomb and the Grande Lance de Domène. Clearly visible in the middle of the cirque, the Jean Collet refuge is located at an altitude of 1,947 meters on a flat area following a rocky bar. This appearance of a gigantic half-moon staircase is what gives the site its regional reputation, and the current classification, dating from 1957, actually reinforced and extended an initial protection measure taken in 1911. This geological form bears witness to the work of the Grésivaudan glacier, which shaped the Belledonne massif into “balconies,” the main feature of this landscape. From the cirque, beyond the Grésivaudan valley and Grenoble, the view takes in the Saint Eynard and Chartreuse massifs. Located in the “playground” of the people of Grenoble, the site attracts ice climbing enthusiasts in winter and hikers in summer.
