André Cottavoz 1922-2012 Lyon "Still life with pomegranates and a glass of wine" Oil on panel, signed lower right. Provenance: private collection. André Cottavoz, born in Saint-Marcellin (Isère) on July 29, 1922 and died on July 8, 2012 in Vallauris[1],[2], was a French painter and lithographer who belonged to the Sanzist group and the School of Paris[3]: the New Figuration of the Lyon school, or Sanzism. Jean Fusaro, André Lauran, Jacques Truphémus, and Paul Philibert-Charrin joined André Cottavoz in expressing these tendencies, namely the search for a light less natural than one emanating from within the canvas itself, an intention that Cottavoz himself supported through the thickness of the "sensual paste he accumulates in pastel and chalky tones […] being thereby figurative in the sense that he starts from reality, abstract in the sense that he reduces it to its essence[4]": for André Cottavoz, painting was truly sculpting his canvases (where monochrome was not uncommon) with a trowel, hence the nickname he was sometimes given of "Green Monticelli." André Cottavoz's works are featured in numerous museums in France and abroad, and multiple exhibitions of his works have been organized in France and abroad since 1946. (Wikipedia)
