Indonesia, charming polychrome mask from the Barong theater, 1970. This colorful and expressive mask was used in a famous Indonesian masked dance performance: the Barong. The masks used in the Barong theater are generally spectacular and highly representative of Balinese culture. Their menacing and fierce appearance is meant to ward off evil spirits. These masks are considered sacred and, before each performance, they are sprinkled with holy water and offerings are made to them.
