"Japan - Koshigaraki Vase In Bizen Sandstone - Edo - Circa 1650"
A very fine Koshigaraki vase made of bizen stoneware dating from the early Edo period. Koshigaraki refers to the ancient Shigaraki ware made in the Shigaraki region of Shiga Prefecture and those made between the Momoyama period and the early Edo period (1573-1700). These kinds of pieces are particularly prized. This vase also embodies an "accidental beauty." The overall distorted shape is the result of the firing process and the shaping of the pot on the potter's wheel. The surface has a natural glaze caused by a coating of ash, a rough texture, and small holes and irregularities created during the firing process. The texture of the blackish-brown base with reddish-brown variations, woven through aging and firing, is striking. It is not something that can be artificially reproduced. Origin: Japan. Period: Edo period (1600-1868) - Circa 1650. Dimensions: Height: 30 cm; Diameter: 27 cm. Conditions: Very good condition except for some chips on the lip of the neck.
