The eldest of four brothers, Tommaso was born in Anagni in 1906 to Carlo Gismondi and Angela Ferretti, but moved with his family to Rome as a boy. After the war, he went to Buenos Aires, Argentina, before returning to his native Anagni in the late 1950s.
He became known as "the Pope's sculptor" for the works commissioned by Pope Paul VI and Pope John Paul II: some of his most famous works include the doors of the Vatican Library and the Vatican Secret Archives (1985), several bronzes for St. Peter's Basilica, the chair of John Paul II, and the Stations of the Cross.
He was also a renowned designer of Vatican and Italian coins.
