Carved oak altarpiece element of a soldier.
Brussels, circa 1530.
Dimensions: 62.5 x 8.9 x 6.2 cm.
Remains of gilding and polychromy. A lance has been added to the figure's hand, but it is completely removable. This type of face with a powerful chin and wide mouth is typical of the villainous figures in Brussels altarpieces from the late 15th and early 16th centuries. See in particular numerous examples in the famous Saint George altarpiece kept in Brussels at the Royal Museums of Art and History.
