Jacques De Chastellus began his career as an autodidact in Paris, as a cartoonist-illustrator for various newspapers and periodicals. After the First World War, he moved to Roeselare (Roeselare) in West Flanders in 1922, where he frequented the studio of the painter Emile Duyvewaardt, with whom he became friends. He participated in the rise of the Art Deco movement in Belgium. In addition to his numerous drawings, De Chastellus is known for his seascapes, landscapes and some orientalist paintings, most often adopting a post-impressionist style.
