Clément Massier (1844-1917), French ceramist. The Massiers (Jérôme, Clément, Delphin, Cédric) are a dynasty of ceramists that dates back beyond the French Revolution and who played a key role in the revival of Vallauris ceramics. Clément was introduced to pottery by Gaetano Gandolfi, an Italian master ceramist hired by his father. Gandolfi would be the initiator of several techniques, including glazed earthenware, which would make the Massier house famous. In 1887, he would become official supplier to the English crown. Clément also worked with renowned artists such as the Scottish sculptor Alexandre Munroe, the ceramist Félix Optat Milet, who trained at Sèvres, the sculptor James Vibert, the painter Jules Scalbert, and especially Lucien Lévy-Dhurmer. After his death, Clément Massier's company was taken over by his daughters, who reissued their father's works.
